MINIMUM JOUSTING SET
This armour is designed for competition jousters. It provides
both minimum sane protection and a solid foundation on which to affix
the shield (included). The set is comprised of; a bellows faced visor
helm with an extremely substantial staple and hook fastener, a bevor,
a divided breastplate, a divided backplate, a left great pauldren with
a pass guard with a strap to fasten it directly to the shield, and a jousting
shield. The helm is designed for glue in padding which is not included.
Most folks prefer foam rubber of one sort or another. Personally I use
sheepskin. The breastplate is deeply rounded to add strength, breathing
room, and a better glancing surface. The cuirasse is cut with a high waist
and divided to maximize flexibility. The breast and back are fastened
at the armpit with substantial snap on pins to prevent the breastplate
and backplate from sliding tighter under severe impact like getting trampled
by a horse. (Yes we tested the equipment that way too. The Blankenshield
way with a man in the armour.) The backplate is channeled over the spine
and flared at the neck as well as embossed over the scapula to provide
maximum protection to the spine. The shield is strapped to the pauldren
and the wrist is strapped to the forward edge. The balance of the shield
is the same as if two straps were used but the solid attachment at the
pauldren allows the left hand to be free to handle the reins without having
to hold a shield strap. (Historically the heater shield was held in place
over chain mail armour with a strap called a guige that went around the
neck and two straps called enarms that held the forearm in two places.
In most cases the hand passed through the wrist strap to handle the reins.)
Like the title says, this is really minimum.
