Grand Guard

The grand guard is an especially difficult piece to form.
It must articulate well and fit snugly over the armour.
Fastened by the traditional wing nut.
Heavily flanged to deflect the lance point away as it slides across the impact point.
The heavy flange extends around the arm creating a bell like shape.
The lattice work embossed into the fourteen gauge plate extends around the arm as well.
Behind the back the grand guard fastens to the pauldren with a strap and buckle.
In the front the grand guard is fastened by a device called a poir. Pronounced (pwah)
The poir has several purposes. One to hold the grand guard away from the breastplate. Two to absorb some shock. And three to provide a fair degree of movement.
