The hinge is sufficiently strong
to resist direct impacts with steel weapons. Note that the side is shaped to accommodate the ankle bone despite the difficult location

A functional sabaton must accommodate
both bending the
foot and extending the ankle.

It is extremely important to match the
sabaton to the exact size and style of boot being used. A sabaton made
for lace on boots cannot be used with pull on boots. A sabaton made for
a riding boot cannot be used with an engineer boot and so on.
The foundation for all martial arts is
the feet. A well fitting and functioning sabaton is as important as a
well fitting boot and cannot be treated casually.
