Cold Forging???

Unfortunately our giving out free information on how to make your own swords is very, very unpopular with many of those who make and sell swords. More unpopular still is our posting material on historical sword testing methods and documented military standards. We actually get threats from time to time. And most of the time you can find people with malicious intent on forums trying to do us harm. Many of these threats refer to some “brotherhood of sword smiths” and it honestly looks like there is a virtually organized crime attitude here. Price fixing and a concerted effort to prevent any sort of standards being applied. I include a small quote from a typically threatening e-mail recently sent to us.

“What possessed you to say such insulting things such as calling us cheaters and undermining business men? You do know we do this for a living to support something called a FAMILY weather or not we take advantage on people. I would like you to apologize for everything you wrote on your site”

Aside from the obvious spelling and grammar mistakes this person virtually admits to taking advantage of people in their sword manufacturing business. In another part of their e-mail they claim to represent some sort of group of sword smiths although like always they refuse to say who they are. As usual this threat was followed by a number of hostile forum posts by several different people obviously acting in concert. This is so sad. So unlike everything the sword is supposed to represent. A sword should represent honor and honesty not threats by groups that refuse to even reveal who they are. Those who are making swords should embrace honor and the idea that a sword should be something of higher value than monetary profit!

However these people almost always use a certain term to describe the re-arcing process that proves absolutely their actual state of ignorance in metallurgical matters. That term is “COLD FORGING”. Forging by definition involves the displacement of material . In re-arcing no material is displaced as occurs in forging. Simple changes in the arch of a leaf spring are done cold at every leaf spring factory in existence and any one who has even basic professional knowledge of metal working knows it. So whenever you read negative forum posts on the internet referring to our free sword making instructions as “cold forging” and describing it as impossible or causing “microfractures”, it is likely that the person has no clue about actual metal working techniques and is lying about their knowledge, qualifications, experience etc. and any other post or claim made by that person should be questioned. Or worse they are trying to repress information in order to sell more of their deliberately inferior products and those products should be avoided.

It is very, very sad that so many people feel so threatened by posting do it your self information on sword making. But in spite of many, many threats over the years and many surrealistically hostile forum discussions we will continue to keep this free information posted for your use and enjoyment. Over the decade or so that this information has been publicly posted, many hundreds of good people all over the world have made quality swords using the techniques described here. If you are one of those enjoying and using this information, feel free to correspond with any questions. We help people making their own swords almost every day. If you are reading this and are angry because of our responses to threats and our insistence on proper standards and testing for supposedly combat ready swords you should question your own morality not mine! And if you must make threats at least have the balls to admit who you are!
