Back Plate

One of the most highly developed pieces of armour in the Blankenshield system is the backplate. Our practical research and development program over thirty years of making and fighting in armour has shown us that simply covering the spine in metal is not enough.

The back is a highly complex structure with many movements. Most competent armour smiths will emboss over the shoulder blades to accommodate shoulder movements much like we do, but it ends there. We are the only manufacturer of practical armour that raises the force of impact off of the spine by the use of a shaped channel down the backplate. This diverts force applied to the armour, such as weapon strikes, or falling impacts, from the spine.

We are also the only manufacturer to flare the neck at the back of the neck so the backplate presents significantly less threat to the back of the neck in falling or wrestling situations. Whether it is a single piece back plate like the one shown here or one of our divided or segmented backs, these important safety features are always built into Blankenshield cuirasses.
