Equestrian Cuirasse

The equestrian cuirasse is one of our "special" projects. Developed over several decades of testing, this style of cuirasse is designed and built by an experienced jouster for jousters.
Flexibility and the ability to lift the leg when mounting the saddle are all important. The articulation below the waist called the fauld must rotate to grip the saddle and keep the lower part of the breastplate from pinching vital anatomy as well.

The backplate is specially designed to protect the spine during dangerous dismounts. With a flare at the neck and a channel over the spine it cradles the back bone rather than pressing against it and transmits force to either side.

This design is what is called a nested cuirasse. With the upper cuirasse called a plastron that is flexible within the lower cuirasse called a placket. This allows twisting in the saddle. To prevent crushing injuries the sides of the cuirasse are held by steel pins. This prevents the breast and back plates from crushing together. These pins and the holes that they go into are very substantial and tested under very extreme conditions. As have all Blankenshield products.
